Alfredo M. Vitolo

Profile

Alfredo joined Nicholson y Cano in 2013 following the firm’s merger with Estudio Cárdenas. He specializes in commercial and corporate law, particularly mergers and acquisitions, contracts, and privatizations in the energy sector (oil, gas, and power). He advises local and international clients and has been actively involved in the privatization of state-owned companies since 1989.

Since 1995, he has represented international clients in negotiating turnkey contracts for power generation, gas pipelines, gas fields, industrial plants, equipment construction, and plant maintenance, both in Argentina and across Latin America. He has also negotiated the financing structures for these projects. Notably, he was lead negotiator on the contracts for the Camisea gas project in Peru. He has also taken part in arbitrations in Argentina and abroad related to his areas of practice.

Alfredo Vítolo is also a recognized specialist in Constitutional Law and Human Rights. He is a professor at the University of Buenos Aires and at several other universities in Argentina, and both Houses of the Argentine Congress often invite him to testify as an expert witness on matters within his field. He served as Legal Advisor to the Human Rights Secretariat of the Argentine Ministry of Justice. In that role he took part in defending the State before the United Nations Human Rights Committee, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

The Argentine Government nominated him for the position of Commissioner of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights for the 2019–2023 term. He speaks frequently at conferences and seminars on his areas of expertise, both in Argentina and abroad. He also sits on the Executive Committees of several associations devoted to these fields.

Education

Alfredo graduated with honors from the University of Buenos Aires School of Law in 1985 and earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Harvard Law School in 1989. He was a Fulbright Scholar and a Bunge y Born Foundation Fellow.
